What Are Partial Dentures?

When a person is missing teeth or has a problem with gums, they might use a denture to restore their smile. Complete and partial dentures are the two options available. Depending on how many natural teeth remain in the patient’s mouth, these dentures are used.

Partial dentures can only replace a portion of a person’s lost teeth, not the complete set. To acquire partial dentures, you must have some healthy teeth remaining in your upper and lower jaws.

What are partial dentures?

Removable dentures that replace multiple teeth in your mouth’s upper or lower portion are called partial dentures.

Partially removable dentures provide a practical purpose and a purely aesthetic one. The wearer’s ability to chew and speak can also be improved by using these devices. The remaining teeth in your mouth may shift if you don’t wear partial dentures, preventing that from happening.

Partial dentures are often not meant to be worn all the time. Partially removing and cleaning dentures at night is generally recommended by dentists.

Studies conducted in 2017 found that washing partial dentures keeps them clean and lowers the likelihood of cavities developing in healthy teeth around them. Partial dentures may not be as popular because of their detachable nature and worries about their appearance and fit.

Five years after patients received their removable partial dentures from dentists, a study indicated that 39% of those dentures were no longer in use.

Why would people need partial dentures?

If you’ve lost several teeth on the top or bottom of your jaw, partial dentures can be a good option for you. The following are some of the most common causes of tooth loss:

  • Tooth extraction due to deterioration
  • Injury
  • Decay

Whatever the case may be, it’s critical that you take care of your remaining teeth. The partial dentures will be made by a dentist, taking into account your remaining teeth. A dentist may recommend full dentures if these teeth are in poor health.

Are there replacements for dentures?

Do dental implants allow for the usage of a denture to be replaced with an implant-supported bridge? Implants and bridges are typically more expensive, but they feel and look more like natural teeth.

Dental implants are replacing dentures; however, not everyone is a candidate for implants. Dentures can be supported more firmly with the help of dental implants. Implants should be discussed with your dentist.

How are dentures made?

It takes a few weeks and several appointments to get dentures made. Steps to follow once you’ve been prescribed an appliance by your prosthodontist (a dentist who specializes in the restoration and replacement of teeth) include:

  • Your jaw should be imprinted, and measurements should be taken of its relationship to one another and the distance between them.
  • Put together an accurate representation of the denture to be constructed by making models, wax forms, or plastic patterns. Before the final denture is cast, you will be able to try this model several times and have its color, shape, and fit evaluated.
  • Dentures for the last time
  • If adjustments are needed, they will be done.

Are partial dentures safe to use?

If dental adhesives are used per their instructions, they are safe. Adhesive use should have no negative consequences if the denture is fitted correctly.

Adhesives can injure soft and hard tissues if used extensively to repair gaps in a denture that don’t fit properly. In some circumstances, the soft tissues can become inflamed as a result.

A poorly-fitting denture can also lead to bone loss because of its movement on the soft tissue and bone beneath it.

Twenty percent of adults in the United States are believed to have some missing teeth, according to a recent study. Partial dentures can benefit those who have lost all of their teeth yet have some remaining teeth.
